Faith

— B. V. Paramahamsa

Is it necessary to believe in God? Birds, beasts and animals have no knowledge of God; yet they too eat, sleep, reproduce and die. Is it imperative for us to worship god? Wisdom and power of speech are the special privileges God has bestowed on the human beings, which distinguish them from animals. These are not meant for competition, selfishness or deceiving others. The proper use of human talents is to approach and realise the eternal reality. Faith is the inherent nature of the spirit. The Supreme Lord Krishna is the only object of absolute faith. Ignorant persons place their faiths in the perishable things and get deprived of God's grace. Divine culture is neglected, the human life turns out to be inferior to that of animals; since animals commit violence for food and fear, but selfish men indiscriminately torture others. Morality, kindness etc., of the atheists are useless as the baseless castle. The one who is ungrateful to the Universal Father is a misfit everywhere.

Atheistic persons think that, worship of God is an unnecessary activity; secularism alone is useful and worthy. They argue that if a person does not earn his livelihood, can believe in God that he will fulfil his needs? Without struggling for life, can one secure protection from calamities? These arguments seem to be correct to the superficial thinkers. If we enter deep into this matter, we learn that living in this world itself is not a matter of importance, but the way and final gain of life are of real consideration. Mundane activities are devoid of bliss, hence men cannot adhere to them for long. Here in this world, it is seen that similar works bear dissimilar fruits; even carefully done works often produce disastrous results. Without believing in the overall Will of the Supreme Lord, phenomenal variations cannot be explained. Religion does not compete with secular developments, it necessarily completes the same. Soul becomes bankrupt by neglecting divine culture. Foreign statisticians have discovered that most of the patients of insanity and mental disorders are disbelievers in God.

Every creation, naturally depends upon its creator. The equipments of our daily use are produced by different manufacturers through keenly conducted inventions, research and development. Similarly, this limitless universe filled with infinite wonderful dexterity is a creation of God, who transcends limitations, of time and space. A fool alone shall deny the existence of the Omniscient Creator. Numberless pleasing arrangements and accuracy are ever observed in this world. Beginning from microcosm to macrocosm, everything is extremely wonderful, beautiful, systematic and unprecedented, beyond human imagination. The wonderful brain of human beings is a tiny creation of God. How amazing and precise are the compoents of the solar and stellar systems! How magnificient are the galaxies and nebulae! These wonderful things belong to the uni-quadrangular majesty of Lord Krishna; the tri-quadrangular one being the Spiritual Majesty.

Faith is the inherent nature of the individual souls. A man without faith loses himself. In its pure state, faith depends upon God alone. When the Jiva undergoes fall and mundane bondage, his faith gets degraded and distracted towards men, money, lands, politics, violence etc. The human faith should be retracted and directed towards God. Those who are sincere among empiricists agree that, even up to this day we have hardly any more information on the vital problems of humanity, than what was known to the primitive man of stone-age. Darkness fails to guage the light; so also empiricism fails with the spirit. Hence the Upanishadic seer prays that, O Lord, kindly lead me from nescience to eternity, darkness to effulgence, and from death unto immortality'.

In the name of secularism today we have discarded God and religion. This anti-Godly feeling has sown the seed of doom. The western world has amply suffered the impact of Godless materialism. Western thinkers say, "start one good school and close one one hundred prisons." The duke of Wellington uttered: 'Divorce religion from education and all you will produce will be a race of clever devils".

Truth to Live by

— Dr. S. Soundarapandian
In Sanskrit treatises, aspecially in commentary works, we meet sweet truths called 'Nyayas'. One cannot but appreciate these Nyayas for their elegant simplicity and truthfulness to real life surpassing the barriers of time. Here are a few of them :

1. Padma Patra Nyaya

Water droplets do sit on the leaf of lotus. But, it does not stick to it. Similarly, though we live in this world, we need not inculcate attachment to it.

2. Vishakrimi Nyaya

Germs survive even in poisonous things. So, what is poison is somebody's food. So, truth should be weighed with its impacts.

3. Kakathaliya Nyaya

One day, while a crow was sitting beneath a palmtree, a palm-fruit fell down exactly on the head of the crow! The crow died miserably. Now, who was responsible? The crow which sat at the point or the fruit? For some, the fruit appears responsible and for some the crow. Actually, both are not at all responsible! It was a sheer accident! In this way for finding any truth, reason is necessary.

4. Shukrajata Nyaya

In a dark evening, pillar seems to be a man. But, also! it is a pillar, when it is seen closely! So, mere appearance should not be taken into account for, such appearances will cause innumerable troubles to our life.

5. Dakta Patha Nyaya

A burnt cloth retains its form until it is touched by somebody. When the burnt cloth is touched, it just turns into ashes! Similarly, eventhough a sage hardens his body by penance etc., if he is overwhelmed with ego, he is finished at the very moment.

6. Arunthathi Nyaya

In order to point out the Arunthathi nakshatra, people will point out the neighbouring stars and lastly identify the Arunthathi's location, Likewise, by gradations only great things in life could be achieved.

7. Bija Vriksha Nyaya

For tree, seed is a base. But, without tree, how can we get seed? What is the moral here? For everything, there is one opposite view; things in the world are interdependent!

8. Kaka Thantha Nyaya

If we search for teeth in crow's mouth, can we succeed? Certainly not! Similarly, it is futile to search for happiness in life!

9. Shouriga Putra Nyaya

A king once asked his barber to bring a handsom man. The barber could see none! At last, he brought his own son in front of the king. His love and affection towards his son, made him so! Similar is this world! People always utter and support what they want.

10. Gatasascha Nyaya

Pointing inside a pot, we say, this is 'inside'. But, where is the 'inside', if the pot breaks into pieces? Similarly, our world is full of illusions!
