I. Overview

 

Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences, Tirupati, established, under the aegis of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams as a modern super speciality hospital in the year 1993, was granted the status of a University in the year 1995 by an Act of A.P. State Legislature vide Act No.12 of 1995. As per section 29 of the SVIMS act 12 of 1995, the annual report is prepared for the year 2010.

The objectives of the institute are:

  • To create a centre of excellence for providing medical care, education and research facilities of a high order in the field of medical sciences in the existing super-specialities and such other super-specialities as may develop in future, including continuing medical education and hospital administration.
  • To develop patterns of teaching in postgraduate level and in super specialities so as to set a high standard of medical education.
  • To provide for training in paramedical and allied fields, particularly in relation to super-specialities.
  • To function as a referral hospital.
  • To provide for post graduate teaching and conduct of research in the relevant disciplines of modern medicine and other allied sciences, including inter-disciplinary fields of Physical and Biological Sciences.

The Institution, spread in a 55 acre campus, is gradually growing into a prestigious university. Today, SVIMS has 25 super/broad speciality medical departments, two colleges and two inter-disciplinary departments and is developing into a centre of excellence for providing medical care, education and research activities of a high standard in the field of medical and other allied sciences including inter-disciplinary fields of physical and biological sciences. In addition to these, SVIMS also provides training in para-medical and allied fields, particularly related to super-specialities.

The Institution is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under Section 12 (B) of the UGC Act, 1956. Medical Council of India (MCI) has granted permission and later recognition to start DM/MCh super-speciality courses in Cardiology, Neurology, Nephrology, Endocrinology, CVTS, Neurosurgery, Urology; and MD Courses in Anaesthesiology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Medicine, Immuno Haematology and Blood Transfusion. During 2010 the MCI permitted starting of DM (Medical Oncology) and MCh. Surgical Oncology courses with an annual intake of 01 per year w.e.f. academic year 2011-12.

II. Institution Bodies

The institution is governed by the bodies such as the Governing Council, the Executive Board, the Finance Committee and the Academic Senate.

The Hon’ble Chief Minister of A.P. is the Chairman, the Honb’ble Minister of Health is the 1 st Vice-Chairman, the Chairman, TTD Board of Trustees is the 2 nd Vice-Chairman, the Principal Secretary, Health, Finance, the Executive Officer, TTD, the Director, NIMS, the Vice-Chancellor’s of NTR University of Health Sciences, S.V. University and members nominated by the TTD, Academic Senate shall be the members of the Governing Council.

III. Administrative Setup

The Director is the head of the institute appointed by the Chairman of the Governing Council i.e. the Hon’ble Chief Minister.

The Medical Superintendent and the RMO’s looks after the administration of the hospital under the guidance of the Director. The Dean looks after the academic matters and research activities. The Registrar supports in administrative matters.

 IV. Academic Activities

The University is offering 60 graduate, postgraduate courses in life sciences, Allied Health sciences, Paramedical disciplines, Broad specialities, Super-specialities, Diploma and certificate courses in Medical specialities .

The institution is offering 10 super specialty programmes with the permission of the Medical Council of India in which some of the programmes are unique and or not offered by any other institute in the state. The MD course in Transfusion Medicine is a unique academic programme, started for the 1 st time in the state and very few institutes in the country are offering similar programme.

 

  • The constituent colleges are:

1) College of Nursing: The College of Nursing was established in the year 1996, with the objective of providing graduate, postgraduate teaching and conducting research in the relevant disciplines of modern nursing. Courses offered are B.Sc. (Nursing), M.Sc. (Nursing) and Ph.D. The college has excellent infrastructure with well equipped laboratories and advanced teaching and learning activities.

2) College of Physiotherapy: The College of Physiotherapy was established in the year 1998. The college offers graduate and postgraduate courses in Physiotherapy, in-patient and out patient services and special services through Obesity Clinic, Pain clinic, Paediatrics clinic, Advanced Physiotherapy, Ergonomics & Life style modification.

The other interdisciplinary departments are:

1) Biotechnology: The Department of Biotechnology was established in 2003. It offers two courses, M.Sc. (Biotechnology) and Ph.D. programmes. The department has developed cardiomyocytes from human CD 34+ stem cells. The successful students are absorbed in industrial organizations, who are leaders in production of drugs, vaccines, etc. The students are selected in various national level examinations like CSIR, GATE, ICMR, BCIL (Biotechnology Consortium India Ltd., New Delhi).

2) Bioinformatics: The Department of Bioinformatics was established in 2003. The SVIMS is first of its kind to start P.G. Course in Bioinformatics in Andhra Pradesh. The Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and technology has approved the Bioinformatics Centre, Bioinformatics Infrastructure facility in the department of Bioinformatics. The centre has under taken research project sanctioned by DBT. It has four positions of studentship/traineeship sponsored by DBT.

V. Library

There is a well established library with good collection of 7000 books and subscription for 125 foreign and 22 Indian journals. The library has back volume journal collection from the year 1993.

VI. Academic Committees

For strengthening of academic programmes regular meetings are convened such as Board of Studies, Thesis Protocol Committee, Research Committee, Institution Ethics Committee.

VII. CME Programmes

Regular CME programmes are organized on every 3 rd Saturday on alternative months by two departments or rotation as per the fixed academic calendar.

VII. Academic Programmes

The faculty are regularly organizing Thursday, Saturday clinical meeting programmes which includes Clinico Pathological Correlation (CPC), Clinico Radiological Correlation (CRC), Quiz programme, Capsule on an investigation, Case presentation, etc. in addition to the regular academic programmes in each specialty.

VIII. Research Activities

Apart from rendering service to the patients, the faculty are actively involved in research activities under the financial assistance of Central, State Government and private funding agencies, such as DBT, DRDO, ICMR, Central TB Division, European Union, etc.

IX. Honours

The faculty are attending conferences at National & International level regularly and the papers are published in indexed journals. Some of the faculty are receiving awards / prizes from the Government / professional bodies.
